Tuesday

1. Students will fill out individual, confidential evaluations for each group member to be averaged in to the final presentation grade.

2. Students will present their Power Points today. During group presentations, the audience will fill out short evaluation forms for each presentation. These evals. will not factor in to the final grade.

A Separate Peace Group Presentations

You will be working in small groups to research one of the topics below, and then you will present your findings to the class. Once you have been placed in your groups, your group will choose ONE of the following topics to research. You will be provided with library and computer lab time during the next week of class; however, you may need to complete work at home.

Each group will prepare a Power Point presentation on its chosen topic. Each group member will be responsible for 3-5 slides containing factual information as well as photos, if applicable. These slides must be presented in your own words; do not copy and paste from a website. Although each group member is responsible for a portion of the presentation, you must still work as a team to create a presentation that flows well together. This also means that you must practice prior to presenting your topic (public speaking will be addressed later).

Each group is also responsible for providing a printout of all slides (6 slides per page), and group member evaluations.

You will be graded on the following:

ü successfully achieving the day’s goals in the library or lab

ü slide printout

ü presentation

ü group member evaluations

ü daily group logs

Your classmates will also be filling out surveys during and after your presentations for additional feedback. This will not factor into your final grade for this project.

Topics:

1. WWII

Provide a brief timeline highlighting five major events of WWII. Remember to present these events in chronological order!

2. WWII and its effects

Briefly discuss the effects of WWII, both during and after the war. Be sure to include which items were rationed during the war and why.

3. The 1940s

Briefly discuss the pop culture of the early 1940s. Aspects to consider include music, entertainers, clothing styles, athletics, etc. Betty Grable must be discussed in at least one of your slides.

4. Influential people

Highlight five people who were influential during the course of WWII. Madame Chiang Kai-shek must be included as one of the five people.

5. The author

Introduce us to the author of A Separate Peace, John Knowles. Briefly describe his background as well as how this novel came to be.

Here is a tentative research schedule:

Sept. 20 Introduce project/Designing research questions/reputable sites

Sept. 21 Library for research

Sept. 22 Library for research

Sept. 23 Power Point guidelines/Library for research, begin Power Point

Welcome to English 10! I’d like to tell you a little about this class. We will begin to move away from intensive grammar study and focus more on literature and writing in preparation for not only state assessments but also for the next step of the high school years.

This is the third year I am using a blog, and I have learned that it’s a great way to keep parents and students up-to-date on our class activities. I will post upcoming assignments, tests, quizzes, extra credit, and projects on this site. I typically post to the blog at the beginning of each week.

Students will be encouraged to organize assignments in their agendas as well as learn to work independently. While written homework is minimal, students will receive occasional reading assignments and have regular tests and quizzes.

Finally, I’d like to inform you that Edline will not be available to teachers until late next week. Therefore, you will not be able to access your child’s updated grades until we have access.

If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at ldulick@access.k12.wv.us. While email is the most convenient form of communication, you may also call the school at 304-748-7600 during my planning period (2nd block, 9:30-11:00). With your help, I am looking forward to a great school year!
